Sometimes here at STP we have to hand off the reigns and let a fresh voice take the main stage. That time, my friends is today. (Okay, so I need to get my taxes done and don’t have time to review the Oscars. Sue me, It’s been a long week.) Enter the vociferous and unique Jay Hastings, a man lucky enough to consider himself a comedian and luckier to consider himself once my roommate. I asked him for a recap of the awards and he gladly took the challenge. Keep tabs on Jay’s other exploits in the Washington D.C. comedy scene at DC Comedy: 4 Now and his personal MySpace hideout.
No Country for Old Men deserved to win as many little golden men as a gay Martian. But, that was the first movie I’ve seen in the theaters in a long time where I walked out of the theater saying, “Fuck that was good.” (NCFOM also helped erase the shit stain that “The Ladykillers” left in my brain….Welcome back to the top Joel & Ethan.) Javier Bardem scared the shit out of me. He looked like every poor kid I ever made fun of in school and I just knew that Michael Bise (my poor kid from 3rd grade) was going to find me after the movie and ask me to flip the only coin he had to his name. The only downside to the movie was Josh Brolin. He did a fine job acting, but I so wanted him to try and escape on his new bike; only to realize that Corey Feldman had let the air out of the tires (Fuck yeah…”The Goonies” bitches).

Wow, put the dancing shoes on, my friends. Next week’s show will cover the funtastic exploits of the upcoming Academy Awards Show. I highly suggest you listen to the ‘cast instead of watch the show, mainly since it will only take you half an hour, while the award show is estimated to run into the triple digit hour range.

So, the list-making has returned and we all jump into the hot seat with our combined tally of the worst films 2007 has to offer. Without further fanfare, here is the list. Enjoy.
Moe
Story of a Beautiful Country: Filmmaker Khalo Matabane travels across the vastness of South Africa to highlight facets of a culture fractured by racial turbulence and strife. The film tackles some heady topics, which leaves one wondering why the entire film lazily captures interviews from inside of the back of a VW minibus. Think of Taxicab Confessions meets Cry the Beloved Country, but without the nuance of a hooker talking about her latest John’s idiosyncrasies. Overall, it’s an okay film in my eyes, but I guess the film itself is polarizing; everyone else in the ‘cast couldn’t stand the documentary and would have put it on their list if they had room.
Southland Tales: Richard Kelly delves again into the realm of We Hate Your Film Now but Might Be A Cult Classic Later territory with this futuristic (2008!) look at a city through the eyes of a schizophrenic Dwayne Johnson (of “Do You Smell” fame.) Admittidely no one has even seen the film, which is probably an indicator. I myself only watched the trailer and fell asleep halfway through that.
Darjeeling Limited: Jeff sums it up best: Wes Anderson makes a better trailer than he does a film. I’ll have to agree. The trailer looked fantastic, but I hear the film fails to live up. I guess you can only play that Kinks song so many times before people start looking for a good plot and Jason Swartzman playing a role other than the familiar role of Jason Swartzman in a Wes Anderson film.

On the sad eve of the one year anniversary of the world being left without Anna Nicole Smith, we offer to you a gem of outtakes from one of the finest pieces of film art to ever spash against celluloid. Enjoy.

So I totally forgot that my favorite film of 2007 was Stranger Than Fiction, so everything else on the podcast doesn’t count. Sorry.

Well, yes okay. If everyone else is going to throw out their ‘Best of’ lists when the new year rolls around, then we are going to step into the fray and add to the collective mess. We were tempted to jump in with something much more interesting for podcast No. 1, but we just aren’t that original.
That being said, here is my take on the super list:
Number 5
Phil: Transformers - Robotic cars that pee on bad acting and do their best to distract us from Shia LeBouf’s hemming and hawing in Megan Fox’s direction.
Jeff: Knocked Up - Funny film, but I got Jeff to admit that Freaks & Geeks was better (I Win!)
Mohammad: Collateral - Jeff explores what a better ending to the film would be, and Mohammad wonders where the Mann hate is stemming from.
Matt: Science of Sleep - I liked it just because it was refreshing to see someone else getting screwed over by a girl besides me.
Number 4
